Which Baby Wrap/Carrier is Best for Me?

If you know me, you know I absolutely LOVE babywearing. I was devastated when my fourth baby did not like to be worn (torticollis + oral ties/tension). With my fifth baby, I am babywearing pretty much every chance I get— because I kind of have to be hands-free with five kids! PS- there are a few videos with tips at the very bottom for babywearing!

I started babywearing with my first baby, but didn’t “need to” as much as I did with subsequent babies. All 3 of my girls have LOVED being worn! With 7+ years of babywearing experience, I figured I would create a resource with pros/cons I noticed with different wraps and carriers, in hopes of helping you confidently choose the one you think may work best for you! I compiled basic stats, things I noticed when using the wrap/carrier, personal experiences in them, etc!

We all have different preferences, situations, and babies— so what someone may deem the “best carrier” may not be applicable to someone else! This is completely unbiased— all just things I have noticed with different wraps at different ages with my different babies! I will definately share which one I reach for the most at the end, but that doesn’t mean it’s the “best” choice for everyone— just what I have loved the most as a busy mom of 5! I hope you find what you’re looking for!

I wanted to add for plus size mamas that babywearing IS possible! I share some info on this in the sizing/comfort/etc, but @plussizebabywearing on IG is a wonderful resource for how-to’s and favorites too!

Also, wanted to share that many of these different wraps or carriers can be found in local mom groups, BST Facebook groups (I got my Wildbird ring sling from a facebook B/S/T group!), resale shops etc for way less cost if you aren’t wanting to buy new! Hopefully this post will at least help you narrow down which one you think would best suit you!

what to look for/avoid

First and foremost, it’s best to ensure that your carrier or wrap is “hip healthy” from the IHDI (International Hip Dysplasia Institute). Here’s the list. There’s no point in wasting time and money if your wrap or carrier is not “hip healthy”- especially since your baby is going to be in this for multiple hours a day sometimes (I know mine is!).

It’s also worth identifying if the carrier you’re looking at is CPSIA and ASTM compliant (Consumer Product Safety). You HAVE to be careful with “dupes” on amazon. Some are likely okay, but many aren’t. I love a good dupe, but not when it comes to baby’s safety. There have been multiple reports of “dupe” carriers or wraps having seams rip, buckles pop off, etc. I KNOW the appeal of an “artipoppe dupe”, I’d just tread lightly there. Carriers are one place I am willing to spend a tad extra since baby’s safety is in the '“hands” of the carrier. And if it’s not in the budget, I’d look at the B/S/T Facebook groups, resale shops, etc as mentioned above! You can search “Wildbird BST” on Facebook for example— it shares a whole group of moms trading and reselling used ring slings and Aerial carriers!

ticks

We also want to make sure we are practicing “TICKS” when we place baby in our wraps and carriers for safety. This is a great PDF that explains TICKS.

Wraps versus carriers

In this list, we will go through both wraps, a ring sling, and carriers (as people have different preferences!). Wraps are long pieces of fabric that wrap around your body and tie off to hold your baby. They are typically softer and stretchier than a structured carrier. I really love a wrap in the early newborn months— it’s like a warm embrace with your baby. Carriers are more structured with adjustable straps and buckles to hold your baby. Both are great in their own ways! Carriers are secure and comfortable, especially as our babies get bigger. Lots to chat about. Let’s get to it.

getting out of the house with baby + carriers

Honestly carriers have SAVED me postpartum in so many ways, but especially when we are out and about. Tons of videos on this at the end of the post! Also, if you’re curious about venturing out of the house with your baby, I have an entire section of my course dedicated to leaving the house with baby HERE. Tips, tricks, things to keep in mind, etc! I have an even more in depth guide dedicated to all things getting out with baby. From where to go and what to do, to what to pack, to feeds and naps on the go, to practice runs, to options if baby gets fussy while out, favorite things to have on hand, and we walk through multiple real life errands together! This guide is incredibly in depth and will help you leave the house with your baby without the added stress + being able to be flexible and pivot to make it work for you and baby!

LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH BABY CONFIDENTLY

solly baby wrap

The Solly Baby Wrap is one of the first wraps I ever used and my absolute favorite! I also used to have the Moby wrap, but got rid of it because I always wanted to use my Solly. The Moby was definitely thicker than the Solly, but was still comfortable, just didn’t love it as much! The Solly was on my baby registry 7 years ago with my son, Cam! I have used it periodically over the past 7 years throughout my 5 babies. It can def be a learning curve putting it on properly, but once you get the hang of it, it’s SO worth it!

price: $69-84 (dependent on print)

Hip Healthy: yes

Material: Tencel modal

Lightweight, breathable, stretchy— really great for use in warmer and colder months; doesn’t make you extremely hot like some thicker wraps can!

Weight limit: 8-25 lbs

This is a bit limiting for those of us with larger babies, or as our babies get bigger!

head support:

This wrap does offer head support by gently tucking baby’s head to the side into one shoulder strap

Length of Use

LOVE for the first few months! My babies typically “grew out” of this between 6-12 months. Even if they didn’t exceed the weight limit, I found it harder to wear them in this wrap as they got bigger and want to look outward. Blake is 3.5 months and still loving it!

ease of putting on:

As stated above, the first few times putting on a fabric wrap can be daunting. It’s a long piece of fabric and it’s hard to know where to even begin! On top of tying it on ourselves, we also have to learn how to put baby in it appropriately and securely. I have a video with a step by step on this here and in my “babywearing” instagram highlight. All in all, this takes some practice to get used to, but once you do, it’s magic!

comfort:

If the wrap is tied on properly and baby is put in securely, the wrap is extremely comfortable! I also feel like it evenly distributes weight AS LONG AS you spread out those shoulder straps! They should not be scrunched going over your shoulders or by your neck. It also is breathable so doesn’t make me sweat in the summer!

weather:

I personally think that with it being more lightweight and breathable it’s a great warm weather choice. When I have used the Moby in the past it was HOT! Regardless of the wrap or carrier you use, it’s going to be warm being body to body with your baby.

parent fit/sizing:

“Universal fit” and accommodates petite and plus size by how many times fabric wraps around waist at the end before tying off toward the end per the brand, the material is 5.5 yards in length. My husband is able to make this work for him since baby is on his chest, but it’s not his preferred choice (he prefers easy to put on/get in and this is just a bit more of a learning curve).

design:

Solly has tons and tons of different solid colors to choose from and some prints as well! They are very beautiful and there are tons to choose from.

Positions:

This wrap is made to be worn parent-facing only. It does not allow for back carry or front carry facing outward. This can be limiting as babies get more alert and want to look around.

sit down test:

Comfortable to sit down in (if baby allows!)

nursing friendly:

Yes, but can be a bit difficult to master as you need to untie your knot carefully, then work some slack through your entire wrap to allow baby to come down a bit. I will do a tutorial on this soon.

Washable:

Washing machine friendly! Wash items on gentle and tumble dry. I have washed mine many times with no issues! This is a must when baby can potentially spit up or blow out in the wraps— huge bonus in my opinion!

Storage

I love to braid mine for storage. Here is a tutorial I made!

pros:

This wrap is perfect for those snuggly newborn months! It’s extremely comfortable when on properly and I love that it’s a lightweight material, so you can wear in the summer too! It’s also hip healthy and tons of cute prints and colors!

Cons:

The wrap only allows front parent facing carry, which can be limiting for curious babies who want to face out as they get older. Also, a bit more tedious to adjust if you notice it’s too loose once you put your baby in and a tad harder to nurse in!

my Personal experience:

I absolutely love the solly wrap— especially for the first 6 months! It’s comfortable, breathable, lightweight, and such an amazing way to bond! I always call this wrap “nap magic” because my babies fall right to sleep in them! I have used Solly since my first baby more than 7 years ago! I’ve worn it to out to restaurants, kids’ soccer games, at home getting things done, to the grocery store, etc— my big tip is to tie it on BEFORE you leave your house! See here. When you get to your destination, all you have to do is pop your baby right in! I’ve been using with my baby girl for the past 4 months and we literally have it on constantly! She is so snug and loves it and I am comfortable and happy to have her close by. I feel like she’s always nice and secure.

9 MONTH update:

Blake hasn’t quite hit the weight limit for this wrap yet, but is getting pretty dang close! We are still able to wear this, but she def sinks down a lot more quickly and “stretches down” the fabric! Overall, love this wrap the most and got the most use out of it 0-6m!

wildbird ring sling

I got a Wildbird ring sling for the first time with my second child. I actually bought it off of a buy-sell-trade group on facebook and fell in love with using it once she was about 6 months old! I used it a ton with my third baby as well!

price: $74-148 (dependent on print/Material)

Hip Healthy: yes

Material: linen or modal

The linen is a nice, lightweight material great in all seasons. Modal is a bit softer/stretchier, yet still holds structure.

weather:

Great for any season, the linen is breathable, so probably a better choice for warm weather! I wore Lou in the ring sling in all seasons and never had an issue!

Weight limit: up to 35 lbs

Nice for small and large babies

head support:

This wrap does offer head support if you twist the “tail” of the ring sling and tuck it behind baby’s neck

newborn adjustability:

Wear in the front carry position and can use the “tail” of the sling to twist behind back of baby’s neck and tuck in the opposite side for added head support. You can wear in front carry, parent facing for newborns and adjust using your rings and tail as needed to follow TICKS.

Length of Use

This sling works great for newborns to toddlers! I didn’t love it for my babies when they were little without head control, but did like to start using it as they became more alert and look out. I loved wearing my girls on my hip in this around 6 months and beyond!

ease of putting on:

In my opinion, this has a bit of a learning curve as well. First, you need to thread your sling through the rings properly, then you place it on your body and place your baby in. They have video tutorials (and I have one step by step in my babywearing highlight on IG), but give yourself some grace and practice, practice! The nice thing is, you can “thread” your sling through the rings and keep it that way. Then, all you need to do is place it on your body and put baby in when you want to use it! This one is also super important to make sure you don’t have “twists” in the material when you’re threading it, which can sometimes be challenging with rings, but gets better with practice. This is important because when you go to “tighten” your sling, the material will bunch up and not tighten well if it’s twisted going through the rings. Once it’s properly threaded, I keep mine that way and just put it on and put baby in when I want to use! Makes it much easier.

comfort:

It’s comfortable for the newborn phase for sure. I felt like my back did hurt a bit using this as my babies got bigger—with wearing a larger baby on your hip, it can throw body mechanics off a bit and hurt your back or shoulder after while! However, the other option is holding them on your hip—this sling saved my arms!

parent fit/sizing:

Offered in “standard” (74-77”) or “long” (90”) for more or less material based on mom’s size and comfort! “Long” is deemed best for plus size or tall (6ft+). My husband can wear comfortably in this and likes it when I have the sling already threaded!

design:

Tons of different colors and prints/designs!

Positions:

The sling can be worn in front carry, back carry, and on the hip!

sit down test:

Able to comfortably sit down when wearing this in front carry, but not as much when baby is in hip carry.

nursing friendly:

Yes, does take some practice (as with any), but is possible and easy once you get the hang of it!

Washable:

Washing machine friendly (YESS)! Wash items on gentle (I cover rings with a sock!) and lay flat to dry. I usually throw a sock over top of the rings so they don’t chip or damage my washing machine and just hang it to dry!

Storage

Easy to store, I leave mine threaded for use and would just throw in the diaper bag as needed

pros:

I love that it can be worn various ways! I also love that you can use the “tail” for different things like added neck support, nursing cover, sunshade when out, etc.

Cons:

Can be a learning curve with placement and threading. Doesn’t offer much head support for smaller infants (you can use the tail, but I didn’t always find it would stay when I was moving around while babywearing). Wasn’t my first choice for before baby had head control, loved after 4-6ish months!

my personal experience:

I use this sling a lot more once baby is wanting to face outward. I believe I started using it with Lou around 4+ months and would wear her on my hip around 6 months! It def was a learning curve for me with tightening and threading my sling to begin with. Once I got it figured out, I typically wore her on my hip— it’s def not the one I reach for when I have a newborn, as I feel it didn’t offer great head support (it’s a little better with the tail, just not my fave). I wore Lou in the ring sling pretty much any time we left the house and sometimes at home as well when cooking.

9 month update:

I’ve actually started using this sling more the older she gets! You can absolutely use when they are newborns, we just didn’t reach for this one as much when she was younger as we do now! I like wearing her in this in hip carry. It’s comfortable for me since I carry her on my hip anyway, and she likes to be able to look out!

ergo baby ‘embrace’ carrier

I was SO pleasantly suprised with this carrier! It’s easy to use and super lightweight/comfortable. I call it a “hybrid” between a wrap and carrier because of the comfortable material. It feels less “structured” than your typical carriers, while still being super easy to use. If you like comfort/softness and prefer a carrier over a wrap, I’d go with this one! However, keep those weight limits in mind as this is the same as the Solly wrap.

price: $90

Hip Healthy: yes

Material: Oeko tex 100 certified

Lightweight, comfortable with some stretch (without compromising structure). Slim, not big and bulky.

Weight limit: 7-25 lbs

May be limiting as baby gets bigger!

head support:

This wrap does offer head support with extra padding behind the neck area of the carrier, but doesn’t have a specific neck flap to come up

newborn adjustability:

Instructions are right on the waistband! Ergo has you roll the waistband toward you twice when baby is less than 23” (this brings baby up closer to parent). They also recommend “scrunching” the fabric panel to help keep baby in an “M” position (bum below knees).

Length of Use

May not be able to use as long for larger babies. Can face outward once baby has head control

ease of putting on:

SO easy! It is a dream to put on and get baby in— super easy to do on the go too! When baby is smaller (waistband tag gives specific instructions), you need to roll the waistband twice before placing on your waist. This brings baby up closer to you! Once they pass the limit (22”), you can do without rolling the waistband.

comfort:

Extremely comfortable. They did this one right! The shoulder straps are a soft and stretchy material without too much padding (which can get super uncomfortable). Make sure you have the stretchy shoulder straps SPREAD OUT to better distribute the weight. You don’t want them scrunched up over your shoulders or by your neck— spread them out! The waistbelt isn’t THE MOST supportive, but does what it needs to! I will share that this is Mark’s least favorite carrier to use due to his shape. He finds it hard to feel supported in this one (I think he likes a little more structure).

weather:

The fabric is comfortable and stretchy. Not the most breathable, but won’t retain tons of heat either. I wore mine comfortably in the fall and winter months and plan to do more with it as spring rolls around too. They do make the Embrace in a mesh material, which would likely be a better choice for warmer weather, so I would check into that for summer!

parent fit/sizing:

“universal sizing” with a 22-54” waistband per the brand, my husband was not a fan of the fit of this carrier on his body type

design:

Multiple colors to choose from! I have the cream and love it.

Positions:

Can be worn parent-facing and outward-facing once baby has head control

sit down test:

This carrier is comfortable to sit down while wearing in parent-facing carry.

nursing friendly:

Yes, and very easy, see my tutorial for nursing in buckle carriers here.

Washable:

Washing machine friendly! Wash items on gentle and tumble dry. I used my favorite stain spray and washed/dried this carrier in my washing machine— it washes well, which is seriously a HUGE yes for me!

Storage

Easy to store! Compact and lightweight.

pros:

I absolutely adore this carrier. It’s such a good bang for your buck! It’s incredibly comfortable (even moreso than some of the expensive similar carriers!). It’s really pretty, and I can always tell Blake is comfortable in it— she loves it!

Cons:

The weight limit is a bit limiting and there could be a flap for extra head support in the newborn stage, but other than that— it’s a love!

my personal experience:

I really love this find! I got it with my fifth baby and have used it a lot with her! It is just so comfortable and the perfect wrap/structured carrier hybrid. It really checks all the boxes for me because I love both of those! The fact that it washes in the washing machine is also chef’s kiss*. I have worn Blake in this at games, out to eat, to the zoo, looking at christmas lights, and even on halloween with my family trick or treating!

9 month update:

Just like the Solly Wrap, we aren’t quite hitting the weight limit on this yet, but teetering right on the cusp! When I wear this one, she definitely starts to sag the fabric pretty quickly. I don’t like wearing this one as much at this age, but gosh I loved it when she was smaller!

GET THE ERGO EMBRACE HERE (pointe knit and mesh linked)

sakura bloom scout carrier

This carrier is a bit different than the ones mentioned above.

price: $240-580

Hip Healthy: yes

Material: Linen + Cotton

Comfortable, yet structured. Is not stretchy.

Weight limit: 7-45 lbs

Really great longevity for newborn- toddlerhood!

head support:

Not tons of extra head support for newborns, but the back panel does come up a little higher behind the neck

newborn adjustments:

Has an adjuster inside the fabric panel to “scrunch/pull” fabric together and make it wider/less wide for newborn legs and hips

Length of Use

With going up to 45 lbs and the ability to front or back carry as a backpack style, this carrier can last a while!

ease of putting on:

This carrier is a bit different in that it has backpack style straps, with a tightening clasp at the top, behind the neck and between the 2 straps. It is a bit challenging at times to lift arms behind back and appropriately tighten the clasp behind the neck without feeling like you’re squishing baby. You have to thread the material through 2 rings, then back through 1, then tighten. It’s fine! Just takes a little learning and getting used to!

comfort:

It’s very comfortable and supportive, and I feel that weight is evenly distributed.

Weather:

The waffle one pictured above is lightweight and breathable! Some of their other materials are a bit thicker and less breathable. I have felt great wearing this one in the warmer weather in years past.

parent fit/sizing:

Universal fit— has fabric that threads through rings at the waist, 62” with rings per the brand. My husband felt like this one was hard for him to front carry (“due to his belly”- per him), so did not love it so far. He has back carried in it in the past and that worked much better for him, but we have to wait until our baby has better head control for that again!

design:

Multiple different colors and textures, some with leather on straps and some without

Positions:

Can be worn in front or back carry

sit down test:

Comfortable to sit down while wearing as needed in front carry

nursing friendly:

Yes! Similarly to the buckle carriers that cross behind the back, this one works to nurse in by lifting baby’s bottom and loosening the side strap on the opposite side to bring baby down to breast.

Washable:

They recommend spot treating and hand washing as needed— this can be hard when babies are prone to blowouts and spitup, big bummer for the price!

Storage

Very easy to fold up compactly and shove in the diaper bag!

pros:

This carrier is extremely comfortable and really beautiful. When I wear it, I feel well supported and don’t feel that it hurts my back in a way some carriers can. It’s also a nice material for any weather!

Cons:

I don’t love the top-of-the-back tightening closure— it works, it’s just not my preference. However, that’s a small con for a really great carrier all-around. The only other con would be the price (def pricier) and the fact that I can’t throw it in the washing machine is a big one.

my personal experience:

I have had a “Scout” since I had my second baby! I have worn it to restaurants, errands, Christmas tree farm, etc and really love it for newborn and older stages! It's a bit pricier, but worth it since you get some longevity. I also front and back carried both Nora and Lou in this carrier when they were babies. I plan to potentially do the same with Blake as she gets bigger too! I love the ease of putting it on, but don’t love that you have to tighten behind the neck as it can be hard to reach overtop baby as they get bigger if in front carry!

9 month update:

I have been reaching for this a little more often as well because I really like the simplicity of its back carry! I feel like the back carry is easy to get baby into and is also nice and secure. We also still use it in front carry as well, but that does prove a tad challenging sometimes with the clasp behind my neck. With her being older, she gets frustrated when I am reaching up and back to secure it. Once she’s in, though, we are both happy for a good while!

wildbird aerial carrier

I have really enjoyed testing out this carrier, as it just released shortly before I had Blake. It’s very supportive and comfortable and I love the extra head support! I have worn this carrier out of the house many times, around the house doing chores, and nursed in it too! I even brought it and wore walking around NYC. It’s very easy to throw on quickly and get baby in quickly— which is great! This has become one of my husband and I’s favorite!

price: $178-268 (dependent on print)

Hip Healthy: yes

Material: lInen

Lightweight, comfortable, some structure with a little “give” as well

Weight limit: 7-45lbs

This is wonderful for newborn into toddlerhood

head support:

Something I love about this carrier (and why I reached for it a lot with Blake as a newborn when we would leave the house!) is it has an added flap for extra head support. You can leave it behind the neck, or flip it up for a bit more support! It’s also great when nursing in the carrier for a little extra “privacy”. This head support is the most “supportive” out of all of the carriers with flaps for head support.

newborn adjustability:

Small tucked snaps between waistband and back fabric panel contain snaps to scrunch fabric or widen back fabric panel based on baby’s age.

Length of Use

Lasts newborn through toddlerhood, which is amazing!

ease of putting on:

This carrier has an apron style easy to buckle waistband and back criss-cross straps that buckle into each side. It’s 3 buckles total and extremely easy to put on AND adjust as needed!

comfort:

The shoulder straps are padded, as well as the waistband. This does provide comfort, but can be a little bulky for some too!

weather:

Linen is lightweight and breathable, so I am excited to use this in the upcoming warmer months too! The padding on the straps may feel a bit bulky in warmer weather, but it is lined with mesh!

parent fit/sizing:

I love that they offer XS-XL (24-41” waistband") and a L-4XL (35-53.5” waistband) based on parent sizing! Even with the L-4XL carrier, they still provide padding on the entire shoulder straps and waistband. My husband is able to do the XS-XL but maxes it out, he would be so happy with a L-4XL, that’s just not what I have! If you are unsure, they recommend sizing up for more comfort! Per Mark, this and the bumpsuit carriers are his 2 faves.

design:

They offer multiple colors and some prints

Positions:

This can be worn in front carry or back carry (6m+)

sit down test:

This carrier is comfortable to sit down in as needed. I have done many times when my legs needed a break! The waistband doesn’t dig into your stomach.

nursing friendly:

Yes, I have a reel on this here

Washable:

Washing machine friendly! Wash items on cool, avoid brighteners, hang to dry. I washed mine and laid it to dry! It’s sooo important to me that carriers are washable!

Storage

Easy to bundle up and store or throw in a diaper bag

pros:

This carrier is really wonderful for newborn and beyond. I have used it a ton with Blake and it’s really helped with running errands with all of my kids and allowing me to be hands free! It’s so easy to throw on, and washable which is a must for me! Blake LOVES napping in this carrier. I plan to continue using as she continues to grow. As of now, I would say this is the carrier both my husband and I reach for the most!

Cons:

I do feel like when baby is smaller it can sometimes be hard to keep their head in a good position, keep TICKS in mind and adjust as needed! I also feel like the padding on the entire waistband and shoulder straps can be a bit bulky too. The only other con (as of now) is the fact that they can’t keep it in stock.

my personal experience:

I think you all know how much I love the Aerial! It’s very similar to the Ergo Embrace and Artipoppe in my opinion (as far as how it’s set up), but a tad more supportive than the Ergo Embrace. This carrier just came out when I had my fifth baby. I have worn it at home, out to eat, running errands, kids’ sports games indoor and outdoor, new york city, nursed in this carrier, etc. It’s really become a huge part of my life with Blake! I truly love the versatility and the extra flap for head support is a game changer. I love the linen having a little “give” to get them in the M position easily. I plan to utilize this carrier tons as she gets bigger as you can back carry as well! It’s def the one we use the most out of them all!

9 month update:

We have used this in back carry and front carry TONS at this point. We have a few Wildbird aerials and we love and use them constantly. We still have plenty of room to grow with it and I feel plenty supported wearing her as she grows! I have a back carry tutorial posted on IG if you need it!

Artipoppe Carrier

I wanted to test this carrier out strictly to see what all the “hype” is about. I feel like every celeb or big influencer shares how much they love their artipoppe, but I never had one so didn’t know what was so great about it! I’m truly here to just give it to you straight.

price: $320-3000+ (dependent on print) — sadly, no i’m not joking

Hip Healthy: yes

Material: linen, hemp, cotton

Typically thicker and high quality fabrics

Weight limit: 7-45lbs

Great longevity, can do multiple carries

head support:

There is potential to pull up a flap (similar to wildbird Aerial) for extra head support as needed

newborn adjustability:

Snaps hidden inside waistbelt to adjust the fabric panel as needed based on baby’s size and weight: see here

Length of Use

Able to use for a long time due to weight limits and ability to both front and back carry

ease of putting on:

Super easy to put on! Buckle the waistband on, then the shoulder straps cross behind the back and buckle on the opposite side

comfort:

Very comfortable and supportive. Probably the most “structured” carrier out of the bunch. I will say, for my body type, the super large and stiff waistband can get uncomfortable when bending over or sitting down, but does feel very supportive when moving around. However, the large waistband does help with distributing weight and lumbar support.

weather:

Depends on the material. Some are cotton, some are tweed, some are silk. Mine is more of a tweed material and probably won’t be one I reach for in the summertime much. The Cotton may be okay, but my friend has the denim and said it does make her feel hot in the warm weather, especially with the huge waistband.

parent fit/sizing:

They call it a “one size fits all” (fits 27-47” waist per site), not super plus size friendly; my husband actually likes the stiff and large waistband because he said it “feels more supportive” with his body type

design:

Multiple different colors, materials, and designs

Positions:

This carrier can be worn back carry, front carry parent facing, and front carry world facing from 6 months + (they include a strap “insert” for forward facing position)— I have heard that the strap really digs into baby’s abdomen and may not be super comfortable for them, I will test this out when Blake is old enough!

sit down test:

You are able to sit in this carrier as needed, however, I felt that the waistband was so large and stiff that it dug into my stomach and my previous c/section scar for sure when trying to sit.

nursing friendly:

Yes! I nursed in this many times!

Washable:

Each carrier (based on material) has specific care instructions based on material. Many are machine washable.

Storage

Can fold up and store easily

pros:

This carrier is beautiful, functional, structured well, extremely supportive, easy to put on, and comfortable. It’s also easy to nurse in, which I love.

Cons:

THE PRICE is the number one buzzkill— us moms should not need to pay this for a nice carrier, I’m sorry! If it’s in your budget, it’s a great carrier! I just think there are multiple others that have the exact same functionality and comfort for WAY less money and parents should not feel like they '“need” this one to babywear properly. I also feel like the waistband is super stiff and cuts into my belly sometimes and the front facing strap they provide is meh.

my personal experience:

This is probably the most “structured” carrier listed and very supportive with the huge waistband for lumbar support. I’m going to shoot it to you straight— this carrier is absolutely beautiful, AND expensive AF. To some, it’s “worth it”, but to others it’s not within the budget and you’re not missing out! The features are the same as other similar buckle carriers (wildbird aerial, ergo embrace, bumpsuit, etc). There is no “magic” that this carrier holds that should make this carrier so expensive. They use nicer (ahem, more expensive) materials and beautiful prints, but as stated, no “extra” wonderful features that other carriers don’t have. You are paying for the name and status. Is it a good carrier? Absolutely! AND there are other carriers that are structured the same for WAY less cost. Your baby is going to have no idea whether they’re in a $90 Ergo, $200 Wildbird, or a $700 Artipoppe. If it’s in your budget, it’s a great carrier! If it’s not, you’re not “missing out'“. Regardless, I wanted to test it out for the sake of finding out “the hype”. The hype is truly just the name and status. I wore this carrier to kids’ games, nursed in it, went to a kids’ museum, wore at home, errands, etc. Lots of use and it is very comfortable and supportive, AND very similar to other carriers I have! Shockingly, I thought I would reach for it the most, but I typically grab my Wildbird Aerial way more!

9 month update:

Going to be honest, I only use this one periodically, as I tend to prefer my Wildbird Aerial and Mabe carriers the most! However, when I do use this, we have tried both front and back carry and I do feel well supported in both! Especially as she is getting bigger, the lumbar support with the Artipoppe is top notch! I may try to use a little more often this fall!

bumpsuit ‘armidillo’ carrier

I decided to order a bumpsuit carrier to test out as well. I thought it seemed like a great price point for good looking carrier.

price:

$275

Hip Healthy: yes

Material: plush + boucle

The material is really nice and sturdy and formed into a “quilted shell” as the back flap

Weight limit: 7- 45 lbs

This provides tons of longevity and ability to use for a long time!

head support:

This wrap does offer head support with the built in weather cover hidden as a plush pillow behind the neck

newborn adjustability:

Has velcro inside where the waistband and back flap meet so you can adjust the width of the piece between baby’s legs to keep them in the appropriate “M” position. The buckles are extremely easy to adjust for your comfort to keep newborn close and safe.

Length of Use

This can be used for a long time based on weight recommendations!

ease of putting on:

Super easy. Just buckle the waistband and adjust, then pull each shoulder strap over the shoulder and across the back like an “X”— buckles right in on each side!

comfort:

It’s very comfortable! I felt it did a good job distributing the weight so my back wasn’t hurting. There is lumbar padding on the waistband for your lower back and padded shoulder straps as well. I also felt like the waistband was not as thick and stiff like the Artipoppe is. I didn’t love that the waistband padding is one little piece that slides rather than the entire waistband.

weather:

Made of boucle, the waistband is lined with mesh and somewhat breathable. Wouldn’t be my first warm weather choice, but would work!

parent fit/sizing:

Offered in one size, but is bigger than the Wildbird Aerial’s XS-XL waistband size. My husband is able to wear this carrier comfortably, even with some room to spare on the waistband (he maxes out the XS-XL Aerial). The waistband is 49”. According to him, this is one of his favorite carriers and he likes the little piece of padding on the waistband that I complain about (ha!).

design:

As of right now there are 9 different colors, all the same fabric and design! I have the “cloud” pictured here!

Positions:

The carrier can be worn parent-facing and world-facing (once baby is 6+ months).

sit down test:

Easy to sit down in when parents need a leg break!

nursing friendly:

Yes, nurse in it the same as the Wildbird Aerial, Artipoppe, or Ergo Embrace!

Washable:

This is the big downside for me. It’s “spot clean only”. With babies spitting up and blowing out when you least expect it (esp when they’re so relaxed in the carrier), this was a bummer because I LOVE this carrier more than I thought I would!

Storage

Folds up easily!

“Extras”

Water bottle hook on waistband, mesh pockets to hold phone, keys, etc!

pros:

Love the look, the comfort, the pockets for phones, built in weather cover as head support, etc. It was definitely designed well and my baby loves it!

Cons:

I am a little (okay a lot!) sad that it can’t be thrown in the washer if I need to— that’s a big bummer for me for the price and the fact that it’s for a baby to sit in! They are little spitup and blowout machines, so I feel like it getting dirty is inevitable. Also, the lumbar padding sometimes gets in the way when I am trying to adjust and buckle the waistband.

my personal experience:

This one is really supportive and we have loved using it in front carry from time to time! My husband likes this one a lot and tends to use it more than I do. I feel like the weight is well distributed and I don’t get uncomfortable when wearing her around and chasing my other kids. The fabric is hard to clean, which is a huge con with kids’ cheetos or chocolate fingers!

9 month update:

I really like this one, but just don’t tend to grab it as much as others! She still fits in this just fine and I feel her weight holds well in here as she has grown! I am still able to get her in comfortably and wear her for a while! You can do outward facing and we have a few short times, but overall it’s just not my favorite position to have baby in while babywearing, so I usually stick with parent facing anyway!

SHOP BUMPSUIT ARMIDILLO HERE

mabe monarch carrier

This is a very great cross between a Wildbird Aerial and Artipoppe for a fraction of the price. So far it’s been a love.

PRICE:

$120 (LIKE WUT?!)

HIP HEALTHY: talked to the owner- they have applied and applications were paused, so just waiting for approval!

MATERIAL: 90% Cotton + 10% linen

The material is really nice, soft, and breathable. It’s got enough structure to feel secure, with enough “give” to feel comfortable for both the wearer and baby

WEIGHT LIMIT: 7- 35 LBS

This provides tons of longevity and ability to use for a long time!

HEAD SUPPORT:

This wrap does offer head support with the built in flap to flip up and snap under the shoulder straps— great for a newborn!

NEWBORN ADJUSTABILITY:

Has velcro inside where the waistband and back flap meet so you can adjust the width of the piece between baby’s legs to keep them in the appropriate “M” position based on age/size. The buckles are extremely easy to adjust for your comfort to keep newborn close and safe, along with the head support.

The padding doesn’t go the full length of the straps like the Aerial does. I also felt like the waistband was not as thick and stiff like the Artipoppe is (which I personally like that it’s not!).

WEATHER:

Made of cotton. A little thicker than the aerial (linen), but not much! Would work well for any weather.

PARENT FIT/SIZING:

Offered in one size, adjustability from wearer sizes 0-24. My husband is able to wear this carrier comfortably, even with some room to spare on the waistband (he maxes out the XS-XL Aerial). According to him, this is a “really great and comfortable” carrier!

DESIGN:

The classic “Monarch” print and I believe she is coming out with 2 more colors as well with the next launch!

POSITIONS:

The carrier can be worn parent-facing and world-facing (once baby is 6+ months), as well as back carry!

SIT DOWN TEST:

Easy to sit down in when parents need a leg break! Waistband doesn’t dig into my body like the Artipoppe does.

NURSING FRIENDLY:

Yes, nurse in it the same as the Wildbird Aerial, Artipoppe, or Ergo Embrace!

WASHABLE:

Can machine wash on gentle and lay flat to dry! This is a huge pro!

STORAGE

Folds up easily!

PROS:

The look and quality of this carrier is top notch for the price. It looks like the Artipoppe, but priced at $120! The price is unbeatable. It’s not only beautiful, but comfortable and easy to use. And it allows for all 3 carries!

CONS:

Honestly, not much. The padding doesn’t cover the entire shoulder strap like the Wildbird Aerial does. The adjustment part of the straps does need a little “breaking in” to slide well sometimes, but mine is getting better! Those are seriously so petty though for the quality and price provided in this carrier!

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:

I have absolutely loved using this carrier. I plan to continue to use it! It’s so well structured, beautiful, comfortable. I honestly cannot believe the quality you get for the price! It’s also a mom-owned business, which we loveeee! I have worn this multiple places, nursed in it, etc. It’s great! In my personal opinion, I like it much better than the Artipoppe.

9 month update:

We are using all of the time still! I have used in front and back carry multiple times and we both are just so happy and comfortable! This carrier is so easy to use and so easy to nurse in! It has the perfect amount of structure and the perfect amount of softness/comfort too! They have since come out with a few other colorways too!

here’s the “reader’s digest”

Solly wrap- WRAP- 8-25lbs- lightweight, comfortable, a learning curve to get tied on at first, easy to store, great for the newborn period, can only wear parent-facing, washable

Ergo Embrace- HYBRID CARRIER- 7-25lbs- perfect “hybrid” between a wrap and a carrier: the feel of a comfortable soft wrap with the structure and ease of a carrier, not tons of head support, make sure to read waistband instructions about rolling waistband early on, has a smaller weight limit like the Solly, parent facing or outward facing, great bang for your buck, washable, easy to nurse in

Wildbird Ring Sling- SLING- up to 35lbs- learning curve to master, love that you can “hip carry”, not much head support (can twist the “tail” to make some, but I didn’t love that), more carries are possible, good longevity and higher weight limit, size inclusive, washable

Sakura Bloom Scout- CARRIER- 7-45lbs- “backpack style” straps, parent facing front carry or back carry, good longevity, aesthetically pleasing, tightening buckle can be difficult to reach with baby in (behind neck), good longevity and higher weight limit, a good choice if you like to front and back carry, a bit pricier, washable

Wildbird Aerial- CARRIER- 7-45lbs- front parent facing carry and back carry, structured but comfortable, straps cross in back, good longevity and higher weight limit, aesthetically pleasing, comfortable padding on shoulder straps and waistband, size inclusive, washable, easy to nurse in

Artipoppe- CARRIER- 7-45lbs- well structured, very firm and large waistband, front facing parent facing and world facing or back carry, beautiful prints and expensive fabrics, aesthetically pleasing, a “status symbol” with same features of other carriers, many are extremely expensive, good longevity and higher weight limit, comfortable and supportive, questionable business practices, some washable and some aren’t, easy to nurse in

Bumpsuit- CARRIER- 7-45lbs- well structured, straps cross in back, easy to put on, parent facing and world facing, extra features like a built in weather cover/phone pocket, head support, aesthetically pleasing, spot clean only, easy to nurse in

overall thoughts on all

Overall, I prefer the Solly Baby for my babies when they’re little and the Wildbird Aerial as she continues to grow! Those are the 2 I go between the most currently (she’s 3 months!). I love that I can nurse (see my reel on how to HERE) in the Wildbird and that it does have head support when I want to put her in the carrier (even as a newborn). I love the longevity of the Wildbird Aerial, as it will last me until she is a toddler! I will say that a close tie for second for me, personally, is the Ergo Embrace and Bumpsuit! I do feel like I may like my Sakura Bloom even more as she gets a bit bigger. I have a feeling I will enjoy back carrying in this “backpack style” carrier!

I have a few more carriers on the way that I will periodically add in to this post as I use.
