Portable Pump Comparison
Okay, friends! We chatted about the different wearable pumps here, now it’s time to shed some light on the different popular portable pumps out there!
Remember, the difference between the “wearable” and “portable” pumps are 2 key factors:
Wearables shouldn’t be used as a primary pump for most women, Portables many times can.
Wearables are completely inside the bra (no tubing or collection chambers separate from pump), whereas Portables typically have the small pump motor separate from the collection chamber (connected with tubing).
Portable pumps have changed the game with pumping— some boasting motors just as strong as your trusty Spectra or Medela pumps! Portable pumps are hand-sized pumps that rely on battery power (so you’re not attached to the wall, yay!). Many times, you will still have flanges hanging off your chest, so a “hands-free” bra is a good option to have on hand unless you’re using collection '“cups” (which sit inside the bra connected with tubing to the pump).
There are a few things to note with some of these portable pumps. Many of them are “hackable” with other pump parts and pieces— this means you can use the flanges from let’s say…the spectra with the Baby Buddha portable pump. There are tons of different “hacks” and some involve purchasing extra “adapter” pieces and some don’t. Make your pump what you want it to be! However, there is a caveat to remember with doing this. If your pump is covered under warranty, they will void the warranty if your pump breaks while being used with other pump brand parts and pieces. Just something to remember!
The other thing I mentioned in the wearables post, that I wanted to touch on here too: so many of these pump brands call themselves “hospital grade pumps”. This is so so confusing for consumers/new moms. I talk all about true hospital grade pumps here. These pumps are strong, but the term “hospital grade” has become overused in the pump industry as a sly marketing tactic since it’s not an FDA-regulated term— they are not truly “hospital grade” pumps, but can offer a great strong motor (esp for their size). Just wanted to clarify that again, as almost EVERY pump website claims they’re “hospital grade” (insert eye roll).
Portables are an amazing option to have on hand. They can be used on the go, or as your primary pump in some cases! Let’s chat a little more detail about these cuties!
Size Does Matter…?
Here is a comparison of these pumps in the palm of my hand to show their size!
Pumpables Genie Advanced
a little info
The Genie Advance is the one I had to start with because it’s my right hand gal! I actually use this pump as my primary pump— yes, my portable pump is my primary/main pump! I felt it functioned/emptied me just as well as my spectra, but I wasn’t tied to the wall + it is super small to tote around! I absolutely love love love this pump and its capabilities. It is about the size of your hand, compatible with multiple other pump tubing/ collection chambers, closed system, and offers some incredible silicone flanges in their liquid shield kits. Those have been a game changer for me. I have an entire IG highlight (called “pumpables GA”) on this pump and the walkthrough and some of my sessions with it here. Let’s talk through all this pump has to offer!
size
This pump is the size of your hand, but def “bulkier” than some of the other options
cost
$180 for pump and liquid shield kit
$150 for pump only
What’s included?
You can purchase the pump, itself (which will come with a charger)
OR
The pump kit which includes:
Breast pump (with belt clip!)
Charger
(2) Bottles
(2) Shields
(2) Silicone Inserts
Tubing
(2) Bottle Stands
VACCUUM/ SUCTION strength
Up to 330mmHg (for comparison the Spectra S2 is ~280-320mmHg)
vibration
Yes.
settings
Cycle Speeds (cpm= cycles per minute):
Stimulation Mode— 70 (non-adjustable)
Expression Mode— 23-70 cpm (adjustable)
These speed options allow for variability with milk expression. You can mimic baby’s short, quick bursts of sucks to stimulate letdown (milk flow), then find an expression speed that maximizes milk output for your body! This one has less cycle speed options than many of the regular double electric breast pumps, but is one of the few portable options that allow you to change your cycle speed.
extra buttons/settings
This pump also has a “programming” button that helps the pump “remember” your settings when you turn it on. This is truly so helpful!
If you press the side button once while pumping (say you need to readjust yourself in the flange), it will pause!
compatibility with other pump parts
There are always “hacks”, but this pump is compatible with a few different pump tubing/flange kits:
Spectra, Freemie, Legendairy Milk Collection Cups, etc.
This pump is easy to “hack” with a multitude of other pump pieces because it has the same tubing as the spectra when the small white adapter pieces are removed! This gives you some options if you prefer a different shield set, or want to be completely hidden while pumping with collection cups. Above, you can see the adapters just pop right off and you’re left with easy to “hack” tubing (here we plug them in to the LM collection cups with the pumpables white adapters AND the LM adapters that come with their cups).
hygenics/cleaning
Closed system pump to prevent milk backing up into tubing
Can use dishwasher for parts except duckbills/flanges, valve membranes, and backflow protector membranes— which are all made of silicone and can easily warp (per Pumpables website)
battery life
~3 hours pump time, 3 hours to charge fully
Most people, including me, are able to get a full day of pumping (3-4 sessions) in on one charge, no problem.
As the battery gets low, I felt like the pump does lose a bit of suction strength, so it takes longer to empty (but that’s the same with most portable pumps).
noise
Less than 45dB; nice and soft- does get pretty loud as the battery gets lower
FSA/hsa eligible
Yes.
warranty
2 year warranty
insurance
Not covered by/compatible with all insurances
pros
Affordable portable pump option, liquid shields (silicone) are incredibly comfortable esp for women with elastic nipples, strong suction for a portable, have the ability to adjust cycle speeds in expression mode, FDA approved, works with multiple other pump kits and flanges if needed (easily “hackable”), nice battery life.
cons
The flanges are top heavy and easy to tip over (but that’s why they include the little “bottle holders”), have to replace entire “liquid shield kit” often as the duckbills are attached (this can get pricey since they recommend changing ~monthly), some women report not getting emptied as well as their spectra with this pump, the bottles may fill up quickly for women who pump large amounts of milk (though you can use other wide mouth bottles), when battery drains the pump isn’t very strong (but this is the case with all portables, honestly).
my thoughts
I absolutely adore this pump. It has become my primary, as stated above, and reminds me of a mini Spectra. I think a lot of the women in my IG community have been turned on to this pump as well, though some have said their Spectra still empties them better. This is a great pump if you need something portable (to be hands free), but strong, along with vibration. Unlike the Baby Buddha (which we will talk about next), this pump gives off vibration with pumping. This can be helpful in initiating letdowns and emptying more efficiently in some women. I also love the liquid shields, which are silicone. They make for a nice comfortable fit and are extremely helpful in women who have elastic nipples (I have a post all about that here). It can get pricey over time with needing to change out the entire liquid shield kit instead of just the duckbill valve since it’s all attached. Regardless, it’s easy to use— just clip it to your bra or waistband with the belt clip, or place it on your lanyard and go! I have used this a ton “on the go” and it’s been seamless. I love pairing this pump with the Legendairy Milk Collection Cups for “on the go” moments to be more discrete. However, I use it with the Pumpables silicone shields at home!

Baby Buddha
a little info
This pump is one of the smallest ones I have used (and I loved that part about it!). It’s tiny, but boy is it mighty! If you find yourself maxing out on the suction of other pumps, this one might be the answer for you— it’s STRONG!
size
This pump is super small and sleek. I can’t believe its strength for being so small! It also boasts silicone flange inserts.
cost
$249.99
What’s included?
BabyBuddha Smart & Rechargeable Breast Pump Unit (Black)
(2) 24mm Flanges
(2) Sets of Duckbill Valves
(1) Pair of Silicon Diaphragms
(2) Bottles
(2) Bottle Bases
(2) Bottle Storage Caps
(2) Bottle Hygiene Covers
(2) Pump Covers
Three detachable tubes (for easy cleaning) & T-connector.
USB Charging Cable (charge to full in 4 hours)
Detachable Lanyard
Carrying Tote
VACCUUM/ SUCTION strength
Up to 320mmHg (for comparison the Spectra S2 is ~280-320mmHg)
This pump is small and mighty! I never felt the need to go higher than level 2-3 because it was so strong. This is an incredibly helpful aspect if you often like to use collection cups instead of typical flanges (as you typically want to turn suction up a bit for a stronger suction when using cups to empty well).
Note: Unlike other pumps, every few “pulls” in stimulation mode is a LONGGGG pull— this may be helpful, or inhibiting for some. You may want to start off in “expression mode” to warm up first, because that long pull in stimulation mode is a DOOZY. You feel like your body is where you are standing and your nipples are in a different country. As you do get used to it (if you do) it can be rewarding because it typically extracts a fair amount of milk if your body responds to it!
vibration
No. If you’re someone who needs vibration to letdown or empty effectively with your pump like me, this was a big drawback. However, you can always get the Lavie Breast massagers to wear while pumping which can help (this was just yet another thing I didn’t want to spend money on/worry about needing each time I pumped) if I didn’t have to! I’m already forgetful enough, especially when running out of the house with 4 kids!
settings
Cycle Speeds (cpm= cycles per minute):
This pump has 2 modes with pre-set CPMs— stimulation mode (short, quick bursts) with a random huge pull in there too + expression mode with longer slower tugs. Unlike the pumpables pump, you cannot adjust the cycle speed with this pump. It’s also recommended for many women that you immediately switch to “expression mode” to start your pump session and initiate a letdown (yes, this is BACKWARDS from typical). This is because in “stimulation mode” the pump uses short quick bursts mixed with a random SUPER long and strong pull every few tugs. This can be alarming. If you start in expression mode to get the body warmed up a bit, then switch to stimulation mode second, it can help your body adjust and adapt more easily. I feel like this can be confusing until you get the hang of it!
Suction strength can be adjusted (14 levels). There are 9 levels of suction strength. This pump is so strong, I believe most women pump on level 1-2 comfortably.
extra buttons/settings
The main button is a “ track button” to “toggle” between levels
Built in timer so you can see how long you’ve been pumping
Auto-shuts off at 30 minutes
compatibility with other pump parts
You can hack this pump with almost any other pump. They have an entire section on all the options right here. You may need to buy extra parts and pieces to complete these “hacks”. It’s also important to note, the warranty will be voided (as on most pumps) if you used different brand parts and pieces than pump comes with! A few this pump can be hacked/compatible with:
Evenflo, Medela Freestyle, Medela PISA, Kiinde, Spectra, Ameda, Pumpin Pals Flanges (great for elastic nipples), Legendairy Milk Cups, Freemie
hygenics/cleaning
BPA free, closed system pump
Per the website, dishwasher safe — but there are silicone diaphragms I’d be careful with in the dishwasher
battery life
~1 hour of pumping before charge needed , 4 hours to charge fully (per their site)
Most people are able to get 2-3 sessions of pumping in on one charge. I felt like I many times would get 3 sessions because I didn’t need to turn up the suction very high since the pump is so strong! Crazy!
noise
Less than 55dB; not the most quiet option if needing to be super discrete, but it’s small sized
FSA/hsa eligible
Yes
insurance
Yes. They have a form to fill out to get through insurance here.
pros
An incredibly strong portable pump option (honestly I can’t believe how strong it is!), great for using with cups, empties many women really well in less time than other pumps, love how small and discrete it is, the ease of the toggle roller ball is nice, FDA approved, tons of ways to “hack”, nice silicone flange inserts.
cons
Shields offered with pump are only 24mm, the long pull is pretty cringe-worthy, don’t love that you have to pump “backwards” (feel like it can be a learning curve), no vibration, not super quiet, more tedious to clean with lots of parts
my thoughts
For me, this pump was a pass. Not because it wasn’t strong, though! It works SO well for some women! I tried it for about two months or so and it definitely lived up to the strength hype! However, the fact that it was missing vibration (it’s just straight tugs), and the random long pulls in stimulation mode actually inhibited my letdown. It’s almost like my body knew it was coming and was too anxious to let my milk flow. I didn’t want that, so oftentimes ended up pumping with my Spectra pump afterwards. Once I figured out to start in expression mode first (instead of massage mode) to “warm up” it was helpful, but I still had issues with it when I’d switch modes and couldn’t extract much milk if I didn’t. The pump itself is incredibly strong and would work really well for someone who needs a higher suction level typically (which I usually do- so was sad it didn’t work out!), doesn’t need vibration to letdown (or is willing to spend some $ on massagers to use with this pump), and who may have trouble being emptied by other pumps. It’s wonderful for use with cups because it’s stronger than many others. I used it multiple times when testing it at my son’s soccer games with the LM collection cups and it worked well! It was extremely discrete and no one “knew” I was pumping. It’s a really GREAT pump and can absolutely become a primary pump for some women, just didn’t work well for me.

Elvie Stride
a little info
This pump is similar to the “freemie style” pump. It is a small pump motor/hub with tubing attached to cups that sit in the bra (no flanges hanging off the chest!). This is a discrete option for busy and/or working moms.
size
This pump is about the size of my hand, very portable and lightweight
cost
$269.99 — different sized flanges costs extra (21 or 28mm also available)
What’s included?
1 Hub
2 Cup Fronts
2 Cup Seals
2 Breast Shields (24mm)
2 Caps
1 Tube Splitter
2 Short Tubes (for the Cups)
1 Long Tube (for the Hub)
1 Clip
1 Cover
2 Valves
2 Diaphragms
1 Charging Cable
Instructions for Use
VACCUUM/ SUCTION strength
Up to 300mmHg (for comparison the Spectra S2 is ~280-320mmHg)
This pump is similar to the Elvie wearable pump with its strength, in my opinion. It may be a tad stronger than the wearable Elvie, but I still had to use highest suction strength for it to empty me well. I also had to pump way longer than I typically do (with my Pumpables or Spectra) for the same yield of milk.
vibration
Yes. Just like the original wearable Elvie Pump, the Elvie Stride has vibration with its pulls.
settings
Cycle Speeds (cpm= cycles per minute):
This pump only has 2 options: Stimulation Mode + Expression Mode. These are pre-set and cannot be changed, which doesn’t allow for adjusting.
It does have 10 levels of vacuum/suction strength in each mode
extra buttons/settings
No, but does have a letdown button, which is nice!
Auto-switches from stimulation mode to expression mode at 2 mins
Hygenics/cleaning
BPA free, closed system pump
Washable parts are dishwasher safe, which makes things easy!
compatibility with other pump parts
This pump can be “hacked” with multiple other pumps or pump parts because of the tubing. If you remove the white adapters, the tubing is identical to Spectra- sized tubing, so you’re able to hack it with most other pumps! This means you can attach the pump hub motor with tubing to flanges or collection cups you like better. If you like the Elvie Stride flanges, you can attach the tubing to a different pump you like as well.
battery life
lasts ~(5) 30 minute pumping sessions; and takes 2 hours to fully charge (per Elvie’s site). I, however, had to turn my suction up all the way so my battery life didn’t last near this long. I maybe got 2-3 sessions before needing a charge.
noise
Very quiet, similar to wearable Elvie
FSA/hsa eligible
Yes
insurance
Yes. They have a walk through on how to do this here.
pros
Discrete size/lightweight/quiet, no flanges off chest (collection cups instead), dishwasher safe, vibration, letdown button to toggle between modes, pump motor is small, I love that you can twist the tubing connector so the tubing points in whatever direction you want coming out of your bra! Sits really well in the bra/on breasts. Very small and discrete.
CONS
Strength was mediocre compared to other portables, took longer to empty even on highest level strength, was a but cumbersome to learn how to detach and pour out milk at first, app is so-so
my thoughts
This pump was a nice, quiet, and discrete option! I love the concept of this pump— it truly is so quiet and I would say probably the MOST discrete of the listed options. It’s not the strongest portable option, but some women don’t need the strongest option for it to be effective. It’s very gentle, but does use vibration. I personally had to pump with this on max suction strength (and 10 mins longer than usual!) to get the same yield of milk I would with my Pumpables or Spectra. This meant adding 10-15 mins onto my typical pumping time— which, depending on the circumstance, may just not work for some women. I also felt like wearing it around and actually moving and bending did cause some leaking. The cups, however, fit well to the breast and were so much less cumbersome than the LM cups (though I still personally prefer the LM cups because of the silicone aspect). The app also wasn’t great in my opinion.
I tested this pump a ton while out running errands, and even just when doing things at home. It did tend to leak more than I liked if I bent down to unload the dishwasher or move over laundry, but that’s always a potential with cups as they don’t seal to the breast as well when moving. When I was on the go or running errands, it was really nice. I remember pumping in Target while wearing it and was not at all worried about people “knowing” I was pumping. Since I knew I would be in there for a while, I didn’t mind walking around pumping for 30ish mins (10 mins longer than my usual). However, if I was pressed for time, I didn’t like grabbing this pump because I know that even on max suction it took me longer to empty!

Legendairy Milk Duette
A LITTLE INFO
The LM Duette is an incredible pump and the only one of its kind, currently! It can pump each breast with completely different settings (helllooo #slackerboob)!
SIZE
This pump can be viewed as a “bigger” portable option or a “smaller” regular pump option- it’s bigger than all the other portables talked about here, yet smaller than “typical” insurance pumps like the Spectra, Medela, etc. It’s about the size of a pack of baby wipes. However, remember that this pump is the only option listed here with 2 separate motors to control each side separately— so of course it’s a bit bigger!
COST
$249 for just the pump and pieces with 21mm flanges
$259 for the pump and pieces with 25 or 27mm flanges
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
The pump kit which includes:

SETTINGS
Cycle Speeds (cpm= cycles per minute):
Stimulation Mode— 80-100 cpm (adjustable)
Letdown Mode— 20-60 cpm (adjustable)
This pump boasts 3 levels of speed and 9 levels of suction. It can also be completely different with these settings on each breast, which is unlike any other pump! This truly gives the ability to customize your pump to your individual needs! Love this.
EXTRA BUTTONS/SETTINGS
The Duette has a child lock button (in case your toddler likes playing with your pump or you’re prone to accidentally hitting it and changing the settings!).
It also features a mute button, timer, and memory button so you can hop right into your normal settings!
It auto shuts off at 30 minutes
COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER PUMP PARTS
There are always “hacks”, but this pump is compatible with a few different pump tubing/flange kits:
Spectra, Freemie, Legendairy Milk Collection Cups
The Duette has the typical tubing just like the Spectra. Remove the adapters and it’ll hack with most any other pump parts. This gives you some options if you prefer a different shield set, or want to be completely hidden while pumping with collection cups.
The “fluid fit” silicone shields are identical to the Pumpables GA Silicone shield set. If one company is out of the flanges, you can get replacement parts from the other because they’re the exact same.
HYGENICS/CLEANING
Closed system pump, BPA free, FDA approved
Do not use dishwasher for fluid fit shields (just like Pumpables), hand wash only per LM manual.
BATTERY LIFE
2.5-3 hours when fully charged; able to get 3-4 pumping sessions between charges for me
NOISE
Less than 60dB; can be a bit louder than the other options (but also has 2 motors!)
FSA/HSA ELIGIBLE
Yes
WARRANTY
1 year warranty on pump
INSURANCE
Not covered by/compatible with all insurances
PROS
obviously the fact that you can pump each side separately is incredible, fluid fit flanges (silicone) are amazing, multiple sizes of flanges available, decent suction strength, vibration, touch screen style, child lock feature, mute feature is nice
CONS
Tubing pulls out of pump easily, not dishwasher safe, not as quiet as some of the other portables, not as strong as some of the other portables, have to replace entire silicone insert when needing to change out membranes (~monthly depending how often you pump).
MY THOUGHTS
I actually really like this pump. I love that you can work on your slacker boob by choosing different settings for each side (I also show another way the 2 separate motors can be beneficial in my Duette highlight here). I don’t find myself using this capability that much, though. I also thought the pump worked effectively, loved the fluid fit silicone flanges, decent suction strength (but was a bit more “gentle” than others), and battery lasted a good while between charges. It’s easily “hackable” esp with their collection cups. The ability to change your cycle speed gave some variability with pumping also (which many other portables don’t offer). I did notice that the tubing pulls out of the flanges/bottles really easily— any time I bumped the adapter or tried to adjust with my hand it seemed to come out! My output is generally the same as typical with this setup. Sometimes I do have to pump a few minutes longer to achieve that, though. Overall, it is a good pump, but I don’t reach for it as often as I do some of the others!

Freemie Liberty II
A LITTLE INFO:
The Freemie Liberty II pump is similar to the Elvie Stride in that it’s a small motor hub attached with tubing to collection cups (which sit in the bra). If discrete is something important to you— this pump absolutely has that feature! I also love the tubing!
SIZE
This pump is pretty small— fits into the palm of my hand. Lightweight and super portable.
COST

EXTRA BUTTONS/SETTINGS
Has a “turbo mode” for longer, stronger draws when you increase cycle past 10
Memory mode
Auto shutoff at 40 minutes
COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER PUMP PARTS
This pump has the same tubing as Spectra/Pumpables/LM Duette/Freemie as well when you take off the adapters, so is “hackable” with many other pumps.
Spectra, Freemie, Legendairy Milk Collection Cups, Duette, etc
HYGENICS/CLEANING
Closed system pump
Do not use dishwasher, hand wash only per site
BATTERY LIFE

INSURANCE
Typically, yes
PROS
Discrete, quiet, “Y” tubing helps keep the tubing in bra next to cups instead of bulging out (I love that they don’t poke straight out of the cups but sit nicely next to the cups), turbo mode helps with max milk extraction, very small and lightweight pump, love the collection cups option, ability to adjust cycle speeds
CONS
This pump was a bit hard to figure out at first, wasn’t as strong of suction as some of the other portables, more cumbersome to clean
MY THOUGHTS
I didn’t have the best experience with this pump. I wanted to, because it was incredibly small, discrete, quiet, and love the cups option and tubing! I found myself oftentimes hacking the LM cups with the Freemie tubing and the Pumpables GA pump (#makeityourown). The tubing was surprisingly something I really loved— I didn’t realize how much the curved “Y” tubing made a difference in keeping it in your bra instead of bulging out! It wrapped right next to the cups and you could keep it all in your bra/shirt tucked away without kinking up. I used this setup often when I didn’t “want to look like” I was pumping. The tubing really is my favorite part. I did not like how the pump functioned or the inability to have a “letdown button”. That may just be me, but I love the capability to switch back and forth between stimulation and expression modes to try and initiate further letdowns. You can do essentially the same with this pump, but have to cycle way down or way up instead of just hitting one button. The turbo mode was a nice feature and did almost remind me of the baby buddha “long pull” everyone talks about (though not quite near as strong). Overall, it was not my favorite option, but did get the job done to some degree.

Medela Freestyle Flex
A LITTLE INFO
The Medela Freestyle is the portable pump version of Medela pumps! It’s small and compact and has some Personal FitFlex connectors that allow you to pump in a more reclined position without milk pooling in the flange! It also includes a cooler and pump bag with the purchase, which is so nice!
COST
$324.99
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
The pump purchase includes:
1 x Freestyle Flex™ double electric breast pump
2 x Medela PersonalFit Flex™ breast shield size 21 mm
2 x Medela PersonalFit Flex™ breast shield size 24 mm
2 x Medela PersonalFit Flex™ connector
1 x tubing
4 x 150 ml breast milk bottle
4 x lid
2 x bottle stand
1 x power adaptor with USB cable
1 x carry bag
1 x cooler with cooler element
VACCUUM/ SUCTION STRENGTH
245mmHg (for comparison the Spectra S2 is ~280-320mmHg)
VIBRATION
Yes. Lots of vibration!
SETTINGS
Cycle Speeds (cpm= cycles per minute):
There are only 2 cycle speeds available (2 phase expression)— one for the stimulation mode and one for expression mode. There is not an ability to change the cycle speed, it’s already pre-set, which is a bit of a downfall in my opinion.
There is an ability to adjust vacuum strength, however.
EXTRA BUTTONS/SETTINGS
“Letdown” button to toggle between cycles.
There is a “backlight” which makes pumping in the dark much easier.
It is touch screen and syncs with an app.
Programmable memory.
COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER PUMP PARTS
This pump isn’t easily compatible with other parts and pieces because its parts are made specific to the Medela Freestyle Flex. It’s so important to make sure you have extra pieces on hand too for this pump because they’re a bit harder to find in stores. There is this piece, which is less expensive than using the brand medela flex fit middle piece, which needs replacement often. The piece changes the pump to a “duckbill” style so you’d just have to replace the duckbills as needed instead of the entire middle piece. This potentially saves a lot of money (photo shown below)! This pump is easy to hack with the Legendairy Milk Collection Cups using the adapter that comes with the cups!
HYGENICS/CLEANING
Closed system pump
Doesn’t have many parts, so easy to clean. Dishwasher-safe.
BATTERY LIFE
2.5 hours when fully charged; takes around 3-4 hours to recharge fully
NOISE
43dB; pretty quiet, but can vibrate loudly at times
FSA/HSA ELIGIBLE
Yes.
WARRANTY
1 year warranty on pump
INSURANCE ELIGIBLE
Yes.
PROS
Discrete, small and lightweight, compatible with medela breast shields and bottles, decent suction and lots of vibration, loved the adapter that allows for reclined pumping. I did also love that it was so easy to clean + could be thrown in the dishwasher! The programmable feature is always nice as well.
CONS
Was not not thrilled that you couldn’t adjust the cycle (speed), only the vacuum strength. It’s also difficult to find extra parts in emergencies, so always have stock on hand! I did feel like the suction wasn’t as strong as I would prefer, which caused me to turn suction up pretty high with pumping (which also drains the battery faster and makes the pump less effective). I also didn’t feel like the battery life was 2.5 hours as the site says. I was already on low battery after 2 pump sessions, but this may be because I turned up suction so high. I also didn’t love the small lanyard. I think it was made to go on a wrist instead of around the neck, which defeats the purpose of “hands free”. The “y” tubing is nice, but was also a bit shorter than I would prefer!
MY THOUGHTS
I thought this pump was nice, overall. It did a good job, was pretty quiet, and was comfortable. However, I didn’t feel the suction strength was as great as some of the other pumps listed here. I also really do not like when pumps don’t give you options on cycle speed. We are individually so different in what extracts milk the best, and I felt a bit short-changed not being able to adjust that to suit my needs. The phase 1/stimulation speed is pretty typical and I didn’t feel like that needed adjusted (short, quick bursts), but the expression phase could have used some changes! I used the Medela PISA (old school) with my first baby, which also didn’t give an option to change cycle speeds either. After using that one compared to the Spectra, I don’t know if I could ever go back— I love being able to toggle cycle speed to get max milk output. As far as output goes- I did get close to my “typical” output with this pump turned all the way up on vacuum, and with its appropriate Medela flanges that come with it. When I “hacked” this pump with the LM collection cups (which I use often with many other pumps to be more discrete), it only got my about half my regular output, which was a big bummer for me! I do think the fact that the battery was low may have played into it (as a low battery can affect pump motor strength). I tried again with the cups on another day and it was a tad better with a full battery. This pump is overall nice, gentle, great vibration, and works well with its regular parts. I would be cautious hacking with cups if pumping exclusively unless it’s only here and there (wouldn’t do this consistently or it could affect supply).

Spectra S9
A LITTLE INFO
The Spectra S9 is another lightweight portable pump offered by many insurances as well. It’s definitely one of the least expensive portables on the market if you’re paying out of pocket. It’s also the size of a cell phone and weighs only 0.5lb.
COST
$194
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
The pump purchase includes:
Spectra 9 pump
2 – Breast shields (24mm size)
2 – Bottles
2 – Slow Flow Soft Nipples
Tubing
2 – Disc
2 – Cap
2 – Backflow Protectors
2 – Valves
Power adaptor
VACCUUM/ SUCTION STRENGTH
260mmHg (for comparison the Spectra S2 is ~280-320mmHg)
VIBRATION
Yes.
SETTINGS
There are only 2 cycle speeds available (2 phase expression: 70cpm + 26cpm)— one for the stimulation mode and one for expression mode. There is not an ability to change the cycle speed, it’s already preset, which is a bit of a downfall in my opinion, just as the Medela freestyle flex.
EXTRA BUTTONS/SETTINGS
“Letdown” button to toggle between cycles.
There is an LCD screen
Auto shut-off at 30 minutes
COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER PUMP PARTS
The Spectra S9 is incredibly compatible with other pump parts and pieces. Anything with “spectra tubing” is pretty easy to hack or find adapters for! This is compatible with LM collection cups, Spectra S2, Medela parts (with proper adapter), Freemie cups, Duette, etc.
HYGENICS/CLEANING
Closed system pump
Dishwasher-safe.
BATTERY LIFE
1.5-2 hours when fully charged, takes about 4 hours to fully recharge
NOISE
45dB- pretty quiet
FSA/HSA ELIGIBLE
Yes
WARRANTY
90 parts warranty
2 year pump warranty
INSURANCE
Yes.
PROS
This pump is super lightweight, easy to clean, and gets the job done hands-free! It’s also much more inexpensive than other options. I do also love that there is a letdown button to toggle between phase 1 and phase 2. It does also allow you to change vacuum strength in each phase, which is nice. It’s also easy to hack with other pump parts and pieces if you wish.
CONS
There is no option to change cycle speed, it isn’t quite as strong as some of the other options available, suction strength is so-so.
MY THOUGHTS
Overall, this pump was a nice option for “as needed” or “on the go” use. I didn’t feel like it emptied me as well as my Spectra S2, or even my Pumpables or Baby Buddha. It was inexpensive compared to others, quiet, and I loved having the letdown button as well as the auto-shutoff at 30 minutes (esp when you’re busy while pumping and easily forget!). I used this while getting things done around the house and when we took our kids to the zoo I hacked it with the LM cups. That was not a good call, I barely got any milk out even with suction strength turned up high! I tried it again another time and it was better, but still not great. I didn’t mind hacking it with my pumpables silicone flanges (as pictured below) and was able to achieve a better output from that.

MY THOUGHTS
The Motif Luna (their regular double electric pump) is incredible, so I had a feeling I would like this, but didn’t know for sure! I absolutely LOVE a pump that allows for adjustments and options to find what works best for you. Being able to adjust the CPMs is incredibly important, so I love that it gives that option. I sadly was pretty disappointed in this pump! The suction strength (even at the highest level) just did not compare to my Pumpables GA. I usually “letdown” for my Pumpables GA within :45 seconds to 2 minutes, depending. As you can see in the photo below, I was past 2 minutes and still hadn’t letdown. I actually had to incorporate some hand massage to initiate a letdown around 5 minutes during one of my sessions with this pump. A few of the other sessions with this pump were okay, but the suction still wasn’t great and it still took me a while to letdown for some reason. I was able to get close to my regular output those other times, but it did take me longer to “empty”. I also had the pump suction turned up all the way and felt like it still wasn’t even near as strong as my Pumpables GA on a Level 3. I also love my other pumps’ silicone flanges and was reminded how much I love them when I used these typical hard plastic flanges!
