A Gift Basket For Your Nurses

This is something fun that I put together for the nurses leading up to Teddy’s arrival. This is of course not required, so please do not feel obligated to put a nurse basket together— it is never expected by your healthcare team, just sharing this as inspo in case you choose to! My nurses also happen to be my coworkers who mean the world to me, and I wanted to do something fun and thoughtful for them!

I hold my coworkers, nurses, and healthcare workers so close to my heart, especially since the pandemic, and gift giving is my love language!

If you’d like to put together a gift basket for your nurses, keep reading!

Let’s get started!

FIRST THING’S first

Before you get moving on your basket or baggies, I want to remind you that these are not necessary or expected by the staff!

Like with most anything, if you choose to do some kind of healthcare provider gift, there are always options.

I’ve seen parents do so many different things— a handwritten thank you note, small goodie bags for their specific nurses, or even order food like bagels, pizza, donuts, etc for the whole floor.

There really is no right or wrong thing to do if you’re wanting to give a gift. It’s totally up to you and your preferences/budget.

Giving a gift was important to me because they’re my people and I know how hard they work, but again, nothing is expected or necessary. So if it isn’t something you’re wanting to do, then please don’t feel guilty! It’s totally okay!

WHAT SHOULD YOU put in YOUR BASKET/BAGGIES?

As a postpartum nurse, I put these baskets together with us in mind! These are all things that myself and my fellow nurses love, so hopefully yours will too! The most important tip is: SNACKS RULE ALL!

Here’s some basket ideas:

It can really can be filled with anything you want!!

Dollar Tree has some great basket options and snack options if you’re on a tighter budget but still want to do something! We did both pink and blue in our baskets, as we didn’t know our baby’s sex before delivery. There really is no wrong way to put these baskets together!

Other options:

  • Order pizza/bagels/donuts

  • Order coffees

  • Personalized baggies for your specific nurses

  • Handwritten thank you notes

  • Flowers for the nurses’ station

  • Cookies

The options are endless!

QUESTIONS FROM THE kfp community

1. How do I know if I can provide snacks for my healthcare team?

Call ahead! Most hospitals will accept pre-packaged snacks or food deliveries, but you will have to call the hospital to confirm. If you’re thinking of home-baked goods, you will definitely want to ask, because some hospitals will not allow those items for safety/sanitary reasons.

2. How many baskets + how much stuff in each? Or individualized bags for my specific nurses?

It’s up to you! There is no one right way to put these together. If you’d like to do personalized baggies for your specific nurses, you can absolutely do that! You may end up with less baggies than there are nurses, and that’s okay! We aren’t expecting anything, and nobody will be offended.

If you’d like to do a basket, I made two baskets. You can do one for labor & delivery nurses + one for postpartum nurses. Or you could do one for day shift and one for night shift. It’s really up to you! The nurse who you give it to will likely take a thing or two, and then either take it to the desk for the other nurses or into the break room. It’s up to you on how you want to do it all!

I usually keep the baskets in the car and have my husband grab them once we’re admitted. We don’t find out baby’s sex, so the baskets are usually mixed with blue and pink items. But you can honestly do whatever you’d like!

Again, I really want to make sure you know that these aren’t necessary or expected.

If you are wanting to do something though, hopefully this gave you some great ideas to show your nurses that you’re thankful!
